Fraction calculator

Type up to six numbers and pick the operations. The answer and the steps update as you type.

What you enter stays on this page and is not sent anywhere.

Type a fraction, a mixed number (whole number on the left), a whole number or a decimal. You can also type 1 3/4 straight into the left box.

123+34=2912
Simplest form
2912
Mixed number
2512
Decimal
2.416

The digits under the bar repeat forever.

Step by step

  1. Turn the mixed numbers into improper fractions

    A mixed number becomes (whole number × denominator + numerator) over the same denominator.

    123=1×3+23=53
    Rewritten:53+34
  2. Rewrite over the common denominator 12

    The least common multiple of 3, 4 is 12. Multiply the top and bottom of each fraction by the same number so the denominator becomes 12.

    53=5×43×4=2012
    34=3×34×3=912
    2012+912=20+912=2912

    See how the least common multiple is found

  3. It cannot be simplified any further

    The greatest common divisor of 29 and 12 is 1, so the fraction is in its simplest form.

  4. Write it as a mixed number

    Divide the numerator by the denominator: 29 ÷ 12 = 2 remainder 5. The quotient is the whole number and the remainder is the new numerator.

    2912=2512
  5. As a decimal, the digits repeat

    The denominator 12 = 2² × 3 has a prime factor other than 2 and 5 (3), so the decimal repeats forever.

    29 ÷ 12=2.41666666…

How to use it

  1. Type each number: numerator over denominator, with the whole number on the left for a mixed number.
  2. Pick +, −, × or ÷ between the numbers, and add brackets if you need them.
  3. Read the simplest form, the mixed number and the decimal, then follow the steps below.

Questions

How do you add fractions with different denominators?

Rewrite them over the least common multiple of the denominators, then add the numerators. For 2/3 + 3/4 the common denominator is 12, so it becomes 8/12 + 9/12 = 17/12, which is 1 5/12.

How do you divide one fraction by another?

Multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction: 3/4 ÷ 9/10 = 3/4 × 10/9 = 30/36 = 5/6. Dividing by 0 has no answer, so the calculator asks you to change that number.

Why does 1/3 become a repeating decimal but 1/8 does not?

A fraction in lowest terms gives a decimal that ends only when its denominator has no prime factors other than 2 and 5. 1/8 is 0.125, while 1/3 is 0.333… with the 3 repeating forever. The repeating digits are marked with a bar.

Can I type a repeating decimal such as 0.1666…?

Yes. Type 0.16 and choose the last 6 as the repeating digits. The calculator turns it into 1/6 and shows how.
