Questions
How is percent change worked out?
Percent change is (new value minus old value) divided by the old value, times 100. Going from 200 to 250 is a 25% increase. It cannot be worked out when the old value is 0.
What is the difference between percent and percentage points?
Percentage points are the plain gap between two rates. A rate that goes from 40% to 44% rises by 4 percentage points, which is a 10% increase relative to where it started.
Why does a 20% rise followed by a 20% drop not get me back to the start?
The drop is taken from the bigger number. 100 plus 20% is 120, and 120 minus 20% is 96, not 100.
