Questions
How large is the retirement income deduction in Japan?
400,000 yen for each year of service up to 20 years (at least 800,000 yen), then 700,000 yen for each further year. If you retire because you became disabled, 1 million yen is added.
When is only half of a retirement allowance taxed?
Normally half of what is left after the deduction is taxed. Officers with 5 years of service or less get no halving, and other staff with 5 years or less get it only on the first 3 million yen above the deduction.
How is resident tax on a retirement allowance worked out?
The taxable retirement income is taxed at 6% for the city and 4% for the prefecture, each rounded down to 100 yen, separately from your other income and without personal deductions.
What if I do not hand in the retirement income declaration?
Then 20.42% of the whole allowance is withheld and you settle the difference in a tax return. This calculator shows the tax with the declaration handed in, from a single employer.
