Questions
How do I take VAT out of a price that already includes it?
Divide the gross price by 1 plus the rate. With 20% VAT, £120 divided by 1.20 is £100 before tax, so the VAT is £20. Taking 20% off £120 would give £96, which is wrong.
Why is there no ready-made US sales tax rate?
The United States has no national VAT or sales tax. States, counties and cities set their own sales tax, so the rate depends on where the sale happens. Type the combined rate published by your state's tax agency.
How are Quebec GST and QST worked out together?
Both are charged on the price before tax: 5% GST plus 9.975% QST, 14.975% in total. Ontario uses a 13% HST, Nova Scotia 14% and New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and PEI 15%.
How is the tax rounded?
To the cent, or to the whole yen for yen. When you remove tax, the total stays exactly what you typed and the tax is the difference, so the three amounts always add up.
