Questions
Where do the state rates come from?
From the Tax Foundation's table of state and local sales tax rates as of July 1, 2026. No state changed its base rate in the first half of 2026.
Why do I need a local rate?
Most states let counties and cities add their own sales tax on top of the state rate. Your receipt or your city's website shows the combined rate; enter the part above the state rate.
How is tax removed from a total?
The total is divided by 1 plus the rate, so $108.25 at 8.25% is $100.00 before tax and $8.25 tax. Amounts are rounded to the cent.
Does every item get the same rate?
No. Many states tax groceries, clothing or medicine at a lower rate or not at all. Use the rate that applies to what you are buying.
