Questions
Why does a monthly savings plan earn less than its rate suggests?
Each deposit only earns interest from the month it goes in. On a 12-month plan the first deposit earns 12 months, the last only one, so the interest is about 13/24 of what the whole sum would earn for a year.
Is tax withheld from savings interest in the US?
Usually not. Banks report interest of $10 or more on Form 1099-INT, and you pay federal income tax on it with your return. Enter your own tax bracket to see the amount you keep; state tax is not included.
Which tax rates does the calculator use for other countries?
Japan 20.315%, Germany 25% plus 5.5% solidarity surcharge above the saver's allowance, France 12.8% plus 18.6% social levies, Spain the savings scale from 19%, Brazil 22.5% down to 15% by days held. Sources are listed below.
What is the effective yearly rate?
It is the interest divided by the money you put in and by the years. For a lump sum at simple interest it equals the stated rate; for a monthly plan it is lower, which makes plans and deposits easy to compare.
