Questions
What changed in Germany in 2026?
From 2026 you get 0.38 euros for every full km from the very first km. Up to 2025 the first 20 km only counted 0.30 euros. Only the one-way distance counts, not the trip there and back.
Why do I sometimes save nothing?
Every employee gets a 1,230 euro lump sum for work expenses anyway. Only the part of your work expenses above it lowers your tax. With a short commute the allowance alone often stays below that.
Is there a cap?
Without your own car the allowance is capped at 4,500 euros a year. If you drive your own or a company car, there is no cap. Higher public transport costs can be claimed instead of the allowance.
How does it work in Austria?
The Pendlerpauschale lowers your taxable income, while the Pendlereuro of 6 euros per km comes straight off your tax. You get the full amounts from 11 trips a month, two thirds or one third with fewer trips.
