Questions

How do I crop to an exact ratio like 1:1 or 16:9?

Pick the ratio under Shapes. The frame then keeps that shape while you move and resize it, so the result is never slightly off.

What do the Instagram and YouTube choices do differently?

They crop to the right shape and then save at the exact size the service recommends, for example 1080 x 1350 px for a portrait post and 1280 x 720 px for a thumbnail.

Does cropping lower the quality?

The pixels inside the frame are kept as they are. If you save as JPEG or WebP, set the quality slider high; PNG loses nothing.

Is my photo uploaded when I crop it?

No. Cropping happens on this page and the photo stays on your device. The saved picture carries no location data.
