Questions
Where do these exchange rates come from?
They are the euro reference rates of the European Central Bank, usually updated around 16:00 CET on working days. The date of the rates in use is shown under the result.
Why does my bank or card give me a different rate?
Reference rates sit in the middle of the market. Banks, card networks and exchange offices add their own margin or fee, so the amount you actually get is usually a little lower.
How is a rate between two non-euro currencies worked out?
Through the euro. For dollars to yen, the yen per euro rate is divided by the dollar per euro rate. This is how cross rates are normally derived from the ECB table.
What if the latest rates cannot be loaded?
The converter keeps working with a saved ECB table and tells you its date, so you know how old the rates are. You can try loading again at any time.
